Treatment approaches
Formal and informal ways of people helping others overcome their "troubles" have most likely existed since the dawn of man. However, in the last 100 years or so these approaches have been critically examined, formally described and practiced by therapists who have been guided by principles of psychology and psychiatry. Psychological treatment approaches involve a trained therapist working with a client to define and understand the problems they have, to agree on goals of treatment, and to plan on how to achieve these goals.
